How to Make Delicious Fruit-Free Hot Cross Buns for Easter

  • 600ml warm water

  • Pinch of salt


  • 1/3 cup (50g) plain flour

  • 2 tbsp (40mls) water


  • 1 tbsp (20g) caster sugar

  • 1 tbsp (20g) boiling water


  • Prepare the Dough : In a large bowl, mix the bread flour, caster sugar, oil, cinnamon, all spice, yeast, water, and salt. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place into a lightly oiled bowl and cover, leave to rest for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

  • Shape the Buns : Divide the dough into 15 equal portions and shape them into buns. Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each bun. Cover and leave to rise for 30 minutes.

  • Prepare the Cross Mixture : Mix the plain flour and water to create a paste. Pipe a cross shape onto the top of each bun.

  • Bake : Preheat your oven to 180°C fan-forced. Bake the buns for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Glaze : While the buns are still warm, brush them with the glaze made from caster sugar and boiling water mixed together, for a beautiful finish.
