How to Make Authentic Indian Butter Chicken at Home

  • 600-700g chicken breast or thigh, diced

Marinade -

  • 80g yoghurt

  • 2 tsp garlic

  • 2 tsp ginger

  • 1 tsp chilli powder

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 2 tsp garam masala

  • Splash of vinegar or lemon juice


Sauce -

  • 1 sliced onion

  • 400g crushed tomatoes

  • 30g butter

  • 2 tsp garam masala

  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds

  • 1-3 tsp chilli

  • Salt to taste

  • 200ml cream or coconut cream



  • Marinating the Chicken: In a bowl, mix all the marinade ingredients. Add the diced chicken pieces and coat them evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

  • Preparing the Sauce: In a pan, sauté the sliced onions until translucent. Stir in the crushed tomatoes. Remove the onion and tomato mixture from pan, add to a food processor and blend up until smooth.

  • Cooking the Chicken: Add in your marinated chicken, with butter and the onion and tomato mixture. Add the garam masala, fenugreek seeds and chilli. Add salt to taste and pour in the cream or coconut cream. Mix well. Let simmer for 15 - 20 minutes

  • Serve and Enjoy! Garnish with fresh coriander and a drizzle of cream.Serve hot with steamed rice or warm naan bread.
